Training to become a mediator is very straightforward.
Most of the professionals, staff and the volunteers who work at IMCR came up through IMCR's own training program. Frequently individuals started by taking Basic Training through one of the quarterly Mediation classes, then apprenticed at IMCR before going on to receive their Mediation Certification. But as anyone involved in mediation will tell you, as a mediator you are always learning.
The 40 hour class is taught over two weekends at IMCR Dispute Resolution Center in Bronx County by Stephen E. Slate, Executive Director and Certified Mediation Trainer by the Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution & Court Improvement of the State of New York. Most of the classes are in English, however, since IMCR prides itself on being a bilingual organization, at least one course a year will be taught in Spanish.
The cost of the course is $850. After completing this training, individuals may be eligible to participate in an apprenticeship program at an additional cost, at IMCR's discretion. The course emphasizes a hands-on approach while addressing current trends in community mediation. The latest developments in the field are discussed as well as strategies for successful implementation. This workshop is designed to enhance your negotiation skills, broaden your point of view and provide you with the necessary tools to improve your own relationships and those of others. The experience is educational, empowering and experiential.
Objectives of the Basic Training:
* To empower participants in the use of mediation as a principled process for dealing with conflicts and finding resolution for interpersonal disputes in all paths of life.
* To develop an awareness of the effectiveness of the mediation process and to promote its usage as a positive means for resolving disputes
* To share valuable skills that will transform the participant's attitude toward conflict and interpersonal relations.
* To provide standards of practice in the resolution of interpersonal disputes.

Dr. Stephen E. Slate, Executive Director of the Institute for Mediation and Conflict Resolution, Inc. (IMCR), is a seasoned ADR practitioner, responsible for designing IMCR's community mediation program which replaced its pioneering med/arb model of the 70's. In 1993, he became a New York State certified mediation trainer. Mr. Slate's professional competence, reputation and credibility are rooted in his background in education, his understanding of human relations and cultural dynamics, and his sensitivity towards the needs of others. He believes that people have what it takes to make a difference in their lives and the environment in which they live. He shared this premise for over a decade at Columbia University Teachers College, and continues to do so during his workshops at Mercy College. On the international front, he has responded to a request for ADR training in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and continues to assist the Nicaraguan government in its ADR efforts. Dr. Slate is currently a member of ACR, NAFCM, MBB, NYSDRA, and an Advisory Board Member of Mercy College's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Titus Rich, Jr. is the Director of Mediation at the Dispute Resolution Center. As the Director of Mediation, he is responsible for managing the Center's daily operations and staff, as well as training the Center's arbitrators and mediators Mr. Rich has been with IMCR since 1992. He began at IMCR's Harlem site, where he started out as a Dispute Resolution Specialist. Through the years he completed certificate courses in Lemon Law Arbitration, Special Education Mediation, Divorce Mediation. Training the Trainer, Mediation in Community Policing, Lawyer Fee Mediation, Custody and Visitation Mediation, Elder Abuse Mediation, Victim Offender Mediation, and more. Mr. Rich's formal education included studies at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY; John Jay College of Criminal Justice, NY, NY and Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Rich has an earned Doctorate in Theological Studies from United Christian College, Brooklyn, N. Y. Mr. Rich is also a retired member of the New York City Transit Police Bureau.
